University of Thessaly / Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology / Laboratory of Genetics, Comparative & Evolutionary Biology (BIOZ) – Coordinator
The Laboratory of Genetics, Comparative and Evolutionary Biology (BIOZ) was established with the Official Gazette 11971/10-9-2009 (https://www.bioz.gr/el/). BIOZ evolved from an interdisciplinary research group that was originally created to focus on animal genetics research, to elucidate the functional and ecological benefits of genetic polymorphism at the organismal and population level, and to use the fruits of the research to develop potential applications. BIOZ's research activities cover all levels of biological organization, ranging from the isolation, characterization and evolution of genes, genetic polymorphism and species phylogeny, to determining the functional effects of genetic diversity, through comparisons between of different species. Considering methodological approaches, scientific questions and final applications, BIOZ's research activities fall under the following axes: Biodiversity, Genetics in Sustainable Production and Traceability.
Hellenic Center for Marine Research/Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology & Aquaculture ( HCMR/IMBBC )
The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (http://www.hcmr.gr) was founded in 2003 by presidential decree 164/2003 The Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology & Aquaculture -IMBBC (http://www.imbbc.hcmr.gr) is one of the three institutes of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). It has facilities in Heralion(Crete) in Attica (Agios Kosmas, Elliniko )and Souda (Crete), which include experimental fish breeding facilities and specialized laboratories equipped with infrastructure and laboratory equipment at the cutting edge of technological development. The institute was created by the merging of the Institute for Aquaculture (IA) with the Institute for Marine Biology and Genetics (IMBG) in 2012. IMBBC activities derive from both of those two constituent institutes, which continue to be implemented enriched by the new possibilities provided by the joining of forces, synergies, complementarity and concerted action.
